Calculating Your Age in Days
By The Editors, Encore Editorial, Updated June 21, 2026
Your age in days is the number of calendar days from your date of birth to today. Use the date calculator on this site: enter your birthdate as the start date and today as the end date. The result is your exact age in days, including leap years.
Why count age in days?
Years feel big and vague. Days are specific. Pediatricians track newborn age in days for the first weeks of life. Parents share "1,000 days" milestones. Personal finance trackers measure net worth progress in daily increments. Some people find that expressing age in days makes the number feel more concrete and motivating. "I am 13,505 days old" lands differently than "I am 36."
It is also a useful sanity check. If someone claims to have completed 10,000 days of a habit, that is about 27.4 years. Does that match their story? Probably not. Days cut through vague timeframes.
The method
Age in days is simply the number of calendar days from your birth date to today, not counting today itself (the same exclusive convention used by most date calculators).
Steps:
- Open the date calculator.
- Enter your birthdate as the start date.
- Enter today's date as the end date.
- Read the result in days.
Alternatively, in a spreadsheet: put your birthdate in A1, type =TODAY()-A1 in another cell, and format that cell as a plain number. The result is your age in days as of today, updated automatically each day you open the file.
Worked examples
| Birthdate | Age as of June 21, 2026 | Leap years in span |
| June 21, 1996 | 10,958 days (exactly 30 years) | 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 (7 leap years) |
| January 1, 1990 | 13,320 days | 10 leap years from 1990 to 2026 |
| June 21, 2016 | 3,652 days (exactly 10 years) | 2020, 2024 (2 leap years) |
| February 29, 2000 | 9,609 days | Born on a leap day; 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 counted |
| December 31, 1999 | 9,668 days | Same leap years as above |
Notice that 30 years on the nose (June 21, 1996 to June 21, 2026) gives 10,958 days, not 10,950. The extra 8 days come from 7 leap years in that span times 1 extra day each, plus one rounding correction. Leap years are why you cannot just multiply your age in years by 365.
Milestone days worth knowing
| Milestone | Age it represents | Example (born June 21, 1996) |
| 1,000 days | About 2 years 8.5 months | March 17, 1999 |
| 5,000 days | About 13 years 8 months | March 8, 2010 |
| 10,000 days | About 27 years 4 months | March 18, 2024 |
| 20,000 days | About 54 years 9 months | Around March 2051 |
| 25,000 days | About 68 years 5 months | Around November 2064 |
The 10,000th day is a popular personal milestone. To find yours, add 10,000 days to your birthdate using the add days to a date tool.
Leap years and your day count
Every leap year adds one extra day to your life's running total. From 1990 through 2026, the leap years are 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. That is 9 extra days compared to a world without leap years. See leap years and how they affect date math for a full explanation of the leap year rule.
Age in days for newborns and infants
Pediatricians and neonatologists track newborn age in days for the first few weeks, then in weeks through the first year. A baby born June 1, 2026 is 20 days old on June 21, 2026. Gestational age adjustments for premature births are also expressed in days. In these contexts, getting the count right matters for medication dosing and developmental milestone tracking.
For infants, the "age in days" question usually means the exact count, not rounded to weeks or months.
How many days are in a year of life?
Most years of your life are 365 days. Every fourth year (the leap year) is 366 days. Over a 30-year span, roughly 7 or 8 of those years are leap years, adding 7 or 8 extra days to your total life count compared to a flat 365-per-year estimate.
